Prime Minister on August 6 announced on his Twitter handle of changing the name of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award to Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna.
“I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views. Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award! Jai Hind!” the Prime Minister said in his Tweet.
Major Dhyan Chand was a hockey player. He was among the athletes who earned respect and pride for the nation and in his honour, the Nation’s biggest and renowned award has been given Major Dhyan Chand’s name.
