Maxwell said, “What a way to treat our Olympians” on athletes to be in mandatory quarantine after return.

Such long period of quarantine can impact the mental health of the athletes, says Carroll. Maxwell says this is not the way we treat our athletes.

The South Australian Government imposed a total quarantine period for 28 days including hotel quarantine in Sydney for the athletes returning from Olympics. To this, Australian cricket all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell tweeted, “This is actually disgusting. What a way to treat our Olympians who represented us so well.” The Australian athletes managed to secure 46 medals out of which were 17 gold medals.

The total of 56 Olympic team members are returning to South Australia, however, 16 are currently quarantined in Sydney. The athletes will also go under another period of quarantine after completing their quarantine of Sydney. AOC Chief Executive Matt Carroll said, “While other countries are celebrating the return of their athletes, we are subjecting ours to the most cruel and uncaring treatment. They are being punished for proudly representing their country with distinction at the Olympic Games.” Advising the Australian Institute of Sports(AIS) Chief Medical Officer David Hughes, Carroll said that this can challenge the mental health of the athletes after being severely challenged and highly constrained at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
